A major terror plot was foiled in Peshawar after police recovered explosive material concealed inside the tyres of a Suzuki vehicle during an intelligence based operation, security sources said on Thursday.
According to preliminary information, police acting on a credible tip-off intercepted the vehicle on New Rampura Road within the jurisdiction of Hashtnagri Police Station. A police team swiftly cordoned off the area and detained the occupants before conducting a thorough search of the vehicle.
Officials from the Bomb Disposal Unit were immediately called to the scene after officers suspected the presence of explosive material. During a detailed examination, the bomb disposal team recovered explosives expertly concealed inside the vehicle’s tyres, indicating an apparent attempt to transport the material without attracting attention.
The explosive material was safely removed and rendered harmless, while the area remained under tight security until the clearance operation was completed.
Two unidentified suspects travelling in the vehicle were taken into custody and shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation. Investigators are questioning the suspects to determine the intended destination of the explosives, their possible target and whether they are linked to a larger terrorist network operating in the province.
Police have launched a comprehensive investigation, including forensic examination of the recovered explosives and the vehicle, while intelligence agencies are working to identify the suspects and trace their facilitators and handlers.
Although authorities have not officially disclosed the quantity or type of explosive recovered, preliminary assessments suggest the material could have been used in a high-impact terrorist attack if it had reached its intended destination.
The successful operation underscores the growing reliance on intelligence driven policing and inter-agency coordination to disrupt terrorist networks before they can execute attacks. Security measures across sensitive locations in Peshawar have also been heightened as investigators pursue leads emerging from the arrests.
Peshawar has remained a prime target for terrorist groups due to its strategic importance and proximity to several conflict-affected districts. Law enforcement agencies continue to intensify intelligence based operations, surveillance and targeted actions aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure and preventing attacks against civilians and security personnel.
