A prominent religious scholar affiliated with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) was martyred after unidentified motorcycle-riding terrorists opened fire on him in the Birmal area of South Waziristan on Friday, adding to a growing series of targeted attacks against religious figures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
According to security sources, Maulana Ismail was ambushed near the Azam Warsak Fruit Market when armed assailants intercepted and opened indiscriminate fire before fleeing the scene.
Police and security forces rushed to the area immediately after the attack, secured the crime scene and collected forensic evidence. A search and pursuit operation was launched across adjoining localities to trace the attackers and their possible facilitators.
Security officials vowed that those responsible for the assassination would be tracked down and brought to justice, emphasizing that no leniency would be shown towards terrorists involved in targeting religious scholars and civilians.
The latest killing comes amid renewed concerns over a pattern of attacks targeting religious personalities, particularly scholars associated with JUI-F, a party that has consistently condemned terrorism and publicly supported Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts.
Earlier this year, Maulana Sultan Ashraf Khel, another JUI-F scholar from South Waziristan, was martyred in a bomb attack for which the so-called Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) later claimed responsibility.
In May, renowned Sheikh-ul-Hadith Maulana Muhammad Idris was assassinated in Charsadda after unidentified gunmen opened fire near a funeral gathering. ISKP also claimed responsibility for that attack.
The same month, senior JUI-F leader Maulvi Abdul Rahman Sasoli was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Dera Murad Jamali, Balochistan. Authorities are continuing investigations into that case, while examining all possible motives.
Religious and political figures outside JUI-F have also been targeted in recent years. Among the notable victims are ANP leader Maulana Khan Zeb, who was assassinated in Bajaur, and Hamid-ul-Haq Haqqani, who was martyred in a major terrorist attack on Darul Uloom Haqqania.
Security analysts say terrorist groups have repeatedly attempted to target influential religious scholars who openly reject extremist ideology and support state efforts against terrorism. While investigations into the latest South Waziristan attack remain underway, officials have reiterated that intelligence-led operations against terrorist networks and their facilitators will continue until those responsible are brought to justice.
