A prominent religious scholar and Sheikh-ul-Hadith, Maulana Muhammad Idris, was killed in a targeted shooting incident in the Utmanzai area of Charsadda District on Tuesday. In local narratives, the perpetrators are referred to as “Khawarij,” a term used by segments of the public to describe extremist elements allegedly involved in repeated acts of violence. However, official authorities have not yet confirmed the identity, affiliation, or classification of those responsible, and investigations into the incident are currently underway.
The killing has intensified concerns over the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where a series of high-profile targeted attacks have been reported in recent years against religious scholars, political figures, and civilians. Observers note that the latest incident adds to a growing pattern of violence that has raised alarm among local communities and religious circles.
Among the previously cited incidents is the killing of a religious leader, Pir Ibrahim, in the Tangi area of Charsadda on July 21, 2025, in which armed assailants opened fire, resulting in his death. Similarly, on July 10, a political leader, Maulana Khan Zeb, was killed in Bajaur’s Shandai Mor area along with two companions in what was described as a targeted assault.
Further incidents include a suicide attack inside a mosque in Azam Warsak, South Waziristan, on March 14, 2025, where Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam South Waziristan (Lower) district leader Maulana Abdullah Nadim sustained injuries. On February 28, 2025, a deadly attack targeted Darul Uloom Haqqania in Akora Khattak, resulting in the death of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam leader Hamid-ul-Haq Haqqani along with three others, while dozens were injured.
These incidents are frequently cited by local voices as evidence of a continuing pattern of targeted violence across the region, particularly affecting religious institutions and political leadership.
The latest killing has triggered strong reactions among the public, with growing criticism over the frequency of such incidents and concerns regarding the effectiveness of security and governance mechanisms in preventing them.
