Afghanistan and Pakistan Make “Useful” Progress in China-Mediated Talks to Resolve Cross-Border Conflict

Afghanistan and Pakistan have achieved “useful” progress in high-level talks aimed at resolving the cross-border conflict that erupted between the South Asian neighbors last October, according to the Taliban administration in Kabul. The negotiations, held in the northwestern Chinese city of Urumqi, are part of an ongoing effort mediated by China to end hostilities and restore stability in the region.

Since last week, representatives from both countries have engaged in a series of discussions to address the tensions that have escalated over the past several months. The conflict marks one of the most serious disputes between Afghanistan and Pakistan since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, raising concerns about regional security and the humanitarian situation along the shared border.

In a statement from his office, Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi noted that the talks have produced “useful discussions” and expressed optimism that minor differences in interpretation would not hinder the ongoing diplomatic process.

“Constructive dialogue has laid the foundation for progress, and both sides have shown willingness to address contentious issues through negotiation,” Muttaqi said. “We are hopeful that continued engagement will lead to a sustainable resolution that benefits both nations and the broader region.”

The Afghan delegation also engaged with Zhao Xing, China’s envoy to Afghanistan, who has been actively facilitating the talks. Chinese officials have reiterated their commitment to supporting a diplomatic settlement and ensuring that the negotiations remain productive and focused on conflict de-escalation.

The China-mediated discussions reflect the growing role of regional diplomacy in addressing security challenges in South Asia, where geopolitical tensions and historic rivalries have often complicated bilateral relations. Observers note that these talks could serve as a model for future conflict resolution efforts in the region, emphasizing dialogue over military confrontation.

Officials from both countries have committed to continuing discussions and have indicated that further meetings will be scheduled to finalize agreements on key issues, including border security, trade relations, and mechanisms for preventing future incidents.

The international community has welcomed the positive momentum, with diplomats emphasizing the importance of sustained engagement and compromise to achieve lasting peace and stability along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.
