In a significant step toward strengthening public trust, enhancing governance, and promoting lasting peace, a Grand Khyber Jirga was convened at the historic Bala Hisar Fort in Peshawar under the auspices of Frontier Corps Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (North). The high-level gathering brought together 114 tribal elders (Maliks and Masharan), alongside senior civil and military leadership, marking a notable initiative in inclusive dialogue and collaborative decision-making.
The jirga was attended by Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shahab Ali Shah, Inspector General Frontier Corps (KP North) Major General Rao Imran Sartaj, Commissioner Peshawar Division Riaz Mehsud, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Peshawar Dr. Mian Saeed, and other senior government and security officials.
Participants widely appreciated the initiative, describing it as a commendable effort to bridge the gap between the administration and the public. Speakers emphasized that in the modern era, governance models must evolve to ensure transparency, accessibility, and direct engagement with citizens. They noted that growing distances between administrative institutions and the public can give rise to uncertainty and mistrust, underscoring the importance of regular interaction and open forums.
The jirga also highlighted the need to expand participation beyond traditional leadership by actively involving youth in such engagements. Attendees stressed that incorporating younger voices would contribute to more dynamic and forward-looking policy making, while fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among the next generation.
In line with improving governance practices, participants recommended the institutionalization of regular public forums within the civil administration. It was proposed that Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners hold open courts at least twice a week to directly hear and address public grievances. Such measures, it was noted, would not only help resolve issues efficiently but also restore public confidence in state institutions.
During the session, officials announced plans to initiate development projects alongside continued security measures, reflecting a comprehensive approach to stability and progress in the region. Tribal elders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the government and security forces in maintaining peace, while also urging authorities to fulfill previously made commitments to local communities.
In his closing remarks, Inspector General FC KP (North) Major General Rao Imran Sartaj reiterated the unwavering resolve of security forces to safeguard peace in the region. He stated that no individual or group would be allowed to disrupt stability in Khyber, particularly in sensitive areas such as Tirah Valley.
The Grand Khyber Jirga concluded with a shared commitment to sustained cooperation, inclusive governance, and proactive measures aimed at ensuring long-term peace, development, and public trust across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
