Behind The Smear: How Political Elements Tried And Failed To Target Field Marshal Asim Munir

A clarification has been issued rejecting what officials described as a coordinated effort to misrepresent remarks and engagements involving Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir, with circulating social media narratives termed misleading and taken out of context.

According to available details, recent content shared online attempted to portray the army chief’s interactions in a controversial light by assigning religious and political motives. However, individuals familiar with the engagements, including participants of the relevant meetings, have firmly dismissed such claims, maintaining that the discussions were focused on national cohesion, inter-sect harmony, and adherence to constitutional principles.

It was stated that a reported interaction between General Asim Munir and Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei reflected mutual respect and unity within the Muslim world. Sources indicated that the exchange highlighted shared values and solidarity, contrary to the interpretation being circulated on social media.

Participants also rejected attempts to politicise a meeting between the army chief and Shia scholars, clarifying that the gathering was aimed solely at promoting national harmony and mutual understanding among different schools of thought. They emphasised that the event was being deliberately mischaracterised to create unnecessary controversy.

Sources further noted that the central message delivered by the army chief focused on unity, religious tolerance, and the need to prevent differences from turning into divisions. It was reiterated that respect for all schools of thought remains essential for maintaining stability in Pakistan.

During the discussions, it was also highlighted that no individual or group stands above the Constitution and the law, describing it as a fundamental principle of the state applicable to all citizens without exception. Emphasis was placed on prioritising national interest, with officials stressing that the state’s integrity and continuity are central to collective identity and survival.

Reference was also made to Article 5 of the Constitution, underscoring the obligation of loyalty to the state as a binding responsibility for every citizen, aimed at strengthening national unity.

Participants further expressed concern over what they described as a deliberate campaign to spread disinformation for political purposes, warning that such narratives not only distort facts but also risk undermining national cohesion. They called for rejecting propaganda and adhering to verified information.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of unity within the Muslim world and cautioned against external attempts to create divisions, urging vigilance against becoming part of such efforts.

Overall, the clarification stressed that the engagements in question were rooted in promoting harmony, respect, and constitutional order, while dismissing circulating claims as inaccurate and politically motivated.
