At least four civilians, including a young girl, were seriously injured after two mortar shells allegedly fired from the Afghan side landed in a residential area near Sado Khel Farsh in Landi Kotal, local officials confirmed.
The shells struck close to populated dwellings, triggering panic among residents in the border town located in Khyber District. The injured were immediately shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Landi Kotal. Hospital and police sources described their condition as critical.
The incident has heightened anxiety in the area, where communities remain exposed to intermittent cross-border firing amid deteriorating security conditions along the Pakistan–Afghanistan frontier.
Most Striking Development: Civilian Areas Directly Impacted
The reported use of indirect fire affecting civilian settlements marks a dangerous shift in engagement patterns. Mortar rounds landing inside populated zones significantly increase escalation risks and place non-combatants at immediate threat.
Security analysts note that such incidents not only raise humanitarian concerns but also complicate counterterror and border management frameworks. Civilian casualties can amplify pressure for calibrated response measures while testing local stability in already sensitive frontier belts.
Landi Kotal sits along one of the most strategically critical corridors connecting Pakistan to Afghanistan. The broader Khyber region has historically experienced militant infiltration attempts, cross-border firing episodes and counterterror operations aimed at preventing armed network mobility.
The latest incident follows a pattern of rising engagement dynamics along western border sectors. Two days earlier, cross-border firing incidents were reported in other frontier belts, reflecting persistent volatility across multiple points of the Pakistan–Afghanistan boundary.
On Pakistan’s side, security forces have in recent weeks maintained high alert and conducted precision-based counterterror operations in sensitive districts to deter infiltration and disrupt militant regrouping efforts.
The recurrence of mortar fire into civilian areas underscores the fragile nature of the current security environment and reinforces the importance of sustained vigilance along the western frontier.
