United States Reaffirms Support for Pakistan’s Right to Defend Against Taliban Attacks

The United States has officially expressed its support for Pakistan’s right to defend itself against cross-border attacks from the Afghan Taliban, following escalating tensions between the two nations. In a statement issued by Allison Hooker, the U.S. Department of State’s Assistant Secretary for Political Affairs, the U.S. government reiterated its full backing for Pakistan’s right to protect its sovereignty and its people in the face of ongoing militant aggression.

In a post on social media, Allison Hooker affirmed that the United States stands with Pakistan in its efforts to defend itself from attacks by the Afghan Taliban. The U.S. government has been closely monitoring the situation along the Pak-Afghan border and acknowledges Pakistan’s legitimate right to respond to the Taliban’s cross-border offensives.

“Our government has been in close communication with Pakistan on the recent escalation of tensions along the border. We stand firm in our support for Pakistan’s right to defend itself against attacks by the Afghan Taliban,” Hooker stated. “The United States remains deeply concerned about the growing instability in the region and continues to monitor the situation closely.”

Hooker further revealed that she had a telephonic conversation with Aamna Baloch, a senior Pakistani official, during which they discussed the ongoing border tensions and recent military actions. This conversation was part of the U.S. effort to stay informed about the developments on the ground, as the U.S. government seeks to maintain a balanced understanding of the situation.

“During our call, we discussed the current situation and the rising tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. The United States is closely monitoring the developments and firmly believes that Pakistan has the complete right to defend itself against any aggression from the Taliban,” Hooker added.

This diplomatic support follows earlier comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who, in a statement, acknowledged Pakistan’s handling of the situation with Afghanistan. President Trump made it clear that the U.S. would not intervene in Pakistan’s operations to defend itself against Taliban forces.

“I believe Pakistan is handling the situation with Afghanistan very well,” President Trump stated. “The United States will not interfere in Pakistan’s decisions to protect its borders. They are doing what is necessary for their national security, and I respect their sovereignty in this matter.”

The recent flare-up in violence comes after the Afghan Taliban launched a series of attacks along the Pak-Afghan border on the night of February 27, 2026. In response, Pakistan initiated Operation Ghazab Lil Haq, a full-scale military operation designed to neutralize the Taliban’s presence in the border region and prevent further terrorist incursions. The operation, which has led to the destruction of key Taliban posts and the neutralization of over 300 militants, remains ongoing.

The United States has emphasized the importance of stability in the region, particularly following the recent escalation of hostilities. While the U.S. government has backed Pakistan’s right to self-defense, it continues to call for dialogue and peaceful resolution between the two neighboring nations to prevent further violence and humanitarian consequences.

“We urge both Pakistan and Afghanistan to engage in dialogue to address the underlying issues and reduce tensions. However, we recognize Pakistan’s right to defend its sovereignty in the face of these ongoing threats,” Hooker concluded.

The United States’ clear and consistent support for Pakistan’s defense against Afghan Taliban attacks highlights the ongoing international dimensions of the conflict. As Pakistan continues its military operations along the border, the U.S. remains committed to monitoring the situation and supporting Pakistan’s efforts to safeguard its national security.

The U.S. government has reiterated its call for all parties involved to work toward a peaceful resolution to the crisis, while respecting Pakistan‘s sovereignty and its right to protect its citizens from cross-border terrorism.
