The State Committee for National Security (GKNB) has issued a formal warning regarding a concerning increase in the recruitment of young people by extremist and terrorist organisations across Kyrgyzstan, highlighting the growing use of social media platforms as a primary tool for radicalisation.
In an official statement, the national security authority reported that radical propaganda and recruitment activities have increasingly migrated to digital platforms, where they are often disguised as routine online conversations, informal networking, or seemingly harmless exchanges. Authorities stressed that such methods are designed to gradually influence vulnerable individuals, particularly teenagers, without raising immediate suspicion.
According to officials, several cases involving minors have been identified over the past six months. Investigations revealed that teenagers were systematically drawn into extremist networks through sustained online engagement, which later evolved into ideological indoctrination and operational preparation.
In multiple incidents, suspects were detained at advanced stages of radicalisation. Security authorities disclosed that some individuals had progressed to undergoing weapons handling or explosives training at the time of their apprehension, underscoring the seriousness of the threat.
The GKNB explained that recruitment patterns often begin with friendly and trust-building communication online. Over time, conversations gradually shift toward exposure to extremist narratives, anti-state rhetoric, and calls for participation in unlawful activities. This incremental approach, officials noted, makes early detection challenging and highlights the importance of digital vigilance.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to countering violent extremism through proactive monitoring, inter-agency coordination, and public awareness initiatives. Parents, educators, and community leaders have been urged to remain attentive to signs of behavioural change, sudden ideological shifts, or unusual online activity among young people.
Kyrgyzstan, like several countries in Central Asia, has long expressed concern over extremist recruitment efforts and the presence of cross-border militant networks operating within the broader region. Security experts warn that evolving digital tactics require sustained preventive strategies, including enhanced cyber monitoring, community engagement, and regional cooperation.
