Neighboring Countries Under Siege as Afghanistan Becomes Safe Haven for Terrorists: Times of Central Asia

Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government appears unable to fulfill its promises to prevent terrorist activities originating from its territory, resulting in severe security threats for neighboring countries, according to regional reports and security analysts.

The Times of Central Asia reports that Tajikistan’s security forces recently foiled an attempted cross-border infiltration by Afghan terrorists, killing three militants while two others escaped. Heavy weapons, ammunition, and a significant quantity of narcotics were seized from the deceased assailants. The incident occurred along the border adjacent to Afghanistan, underscoring the continuing threat posed by militants operating from Afghan soil.

This incident follows a similar event on 18 January, when Tajik security forces killed four Afghan terrorists attempting to cross the Sarchashma border. Since November, border regions in Tajikistan have witnessed a marked increase in terrorist activity originating from Afghanistan, raising alarm over regional security.

According to the Times of Central Asia, last year two separate terrorist attacks emanating from Afghanistan resulted in the deaths of five Chinese workers, while in December 2025, two Tajik security personnel were killed during clashes with Afghan terrorists at the Sarchashma border. These events illustrate the escalating frequency and lethality of cross-border attacks from Afghan territory.

Security experts have warned that terrorism emanating from Afghanistan has now become a serious challenge for neighboring countries, necessitating coordinated regional strategies and enhanced cooperation to mitigate the threat. Analysts further emphasize that the Taliban’s failure to control terrorist networks operating within Afghanistan not only endangers regional stability but also undermines international trust in its governance.

Pakistan has repeatedly presented concrete evidence of terrorist activity originating from Afghanistan to international organizations. However, security experts note that effective and practical measures by the global community have so far been lacking. They urge that the international community not only condemn cross-border terrorism from Afghanistan but also take urgent, actionable steps to curb it before further casualties and destabilization occur.

The growing pattern of cross-border terrorist attacks demonstrates that Afghanistan under the Taliban continues to serve as a safe haven for militants, posing ongoing threats to regional security, economic development, and civilian lives. Regional and international cooperation is now critical to address this escalating challenge effectively.
