Pakistan Alerts UN as Cross-Border Militancy Intensifies

Pakistan has issued a strong warning at the United Nations over a sharp rise in cross-border militant attacks originating from Afghan territory, describing the situation as “intolerable” and a serious threat to regional peace and stability.

Addressing the international community, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, expressed grave concern over the increasing frequency and intensity of militant violence targeting Pakistan, particularly from groups operating out of Afghanistan. He underscored that Pakistan has repeatedly shared credible intelligence and formal complaints regarding the presence and activities of armed networks using Afghan soil as a base for attacks across the shared border.

“Pakistan has demonstrated restraint and responsibility,” Ambassador Ahmad stated. “However, the continued failure to take effective action against these militant groups is no longer acceptable. The scale and persistence of these attacks pose a direct threat to Pakistan’s national security and to regional stability as a whole.”

The warning comes amid a surge in violence in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province, where Baloch separatist groups have carried out a series of coordinated and deadly attacks in recent days. In response to this escalating threat, the Pakistan Army has conducted targeted military operations over the past two days. According to official statements, at least 145 militants have been neutralized during these operations.

Ambassador Ahmad emphasized that Pakistan’s counterterrorism actions are defensive, proportionate, and aimed solely at protecting its citizens and territorial integrity. He reiterated that Pakistan does not seek confrontation but cannot remain passive in the face of persistent cross-border terrorism.

Pakistan has consistently urged the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan to honor their international commitments by ensuring that Afghan territory is not used by militant groups to threaten neighboring countries. Islamabad has also called upon the international community and the United Nations to play a more active role in holding Afghan authorities accountable for preventing cross-border militancy and ensuring effective border security.

“Counterterrorism is a shared responsibility,” Ambassador Ahmad noted. “Failure to address these threats decisively will have consequences far beyond Pakistan’s borders.”

Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to regional peace, dialogue, and cooperation, while making it clear that safeguarding its people and sovereignty remains a non-negotiable priority. The country will continue to engage diplomatically with international partners, while taking all necessary measures to counter terrorism and maintain internal security.
