Pakistan reaffirmed that national security remains its foremost priority, stressing that border management measures including the temporary closure of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border are justified if they help prevent terrorist violence and protect lives.
Speaking at the weekly press briefing in Islamabad, Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Andarabi acknowledged that the border closure has resulted in economic losses for certain segments, particularly traders, and has disrupted bilateral trade. He described these impacts as a deficit from an economic standpoint, while emphasizing that security considerations outweigh short-term economic costs.
“If the border closure has prevented the killing of our security forces and citizens, then it is a gain in security terms,” the spokesperson stated, underlining Pakistan’s zero-tolerance approach toward terrorism.
Addressing Pakistan’s relations with Afghanistan, Andarabi expressed hope for improved ties, noting that terrorism originating from Afghan soil remains the sole major impediment to stronger bilateral relations. He reiterated Pakistan’s consistent position that Afghan territory must not be used for launching attacks inside Pakistan.
“Our demand that Afghan soil should not be used for terrorist activities against Pakistan is genuine, legitimate, internationally acceptable, and fully consistent with international law,” he said.
The spokesperson reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to peaceful coexistence, regional stability, and constructive engagement with Afghanistan, while stressing that sustainable relations can only be achieved through effective action against cross-border terrorism.
Pakistan, he added, remains open to cooperation and dialogue, provided that its security concerns are addressed in a sincere and practical manner, in line with international obligations and shared regional responsibilities.
