One of the militants killed in Mohmand during a recent intelligence-based operation has been identified as Wazir, a senior commander of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and a resident of Swabi, security officials confirmed on Thursday.
Wazir was among the 14 militants neutralised in the Guluno area of Mohmand District during a major operation carried out by security forces on September 9 and 10, as announced earlier by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). His identification marks a significant development in the aftermath of the operation, which targeted multiple TTP-linked infiltration attempts across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Security sources say Wazir held a key operational role within the TTP’s border network and was long involved in orchestrating cross-border movements and attacks. He had reportedly evaded a major counter-terror raid in the past, which elevated his standing within militant ranks.
The Mohmand operation was part of a wider crackdown in which 19 militants were killed in three separate actions across the province, including Datta Khel (North Waziristan) and Bannu — as part of Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to eliminate the threat posed by Indian-sponsored terrorism.
The elimination of Wazir is being seen as a strategic blow to the TTP’s command structure in the region.
