Iran has doubled down on its military campaign despite mounting international appeals for de-escalation, with the Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson issuing a defiant statement that underscores growing contradictions within the country’s diplomatic messaging. Addressing reporters at a press briefing in Tehran, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei declared that Iran would not scale back its operations, rejecting what he described as vague and ineffectual international appeals.
“We have launched a valiant battle and will continue it with strength,” Baghaei said. “Ambiguous remarks calling on Iran to show restraint are nothing but nonsense.”
His remarks come just 24 hours after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi suggested a more conciliatory approach, stating that Tehran was prepared to halt its operations—if Israel ceased its attacks. The stark contrast between the two statements has fueled speculation over a possible disconnect within Iran’s leadership at a time of heightened regional volatility.
The conflicting signals from Tehran emerge against the backdrop of intensifying hostilities, with international stakeholders urging both sides to prevent further escalation. However, Baghaei’s statement suggests that hardline voices are gaining prominence within the Islamic Republic’s corridors of power.
As of Monday evening, Israeli officials had not issued a formal response to Baghaei’s comments.
