Pakistan Army Committed to Constitution, National Security, and Regional Stability: DG ISPR

Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR), Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, has firmly reiterated that the Pakistan Army remains committed to the Constitution and national security and is determined to neutralize threats from all terrorist groups, including the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, the DG ISPR emphasized that the security forces are actively engaged in combating terrorism and safeguarding the country’s borders. “All terrorist outfits including TTP are on Pakistan’s radar and are being actively targeted. Any elements involved in terrorism will be neutralized with full force,” he said.

Commenting on regional concerns, General Ahmed Sharif stated that Pakistan has consistently raised the issue of cross-border terrorism with Afghan authorities. “Pakistan does not allow its soil to be used against any other country and expects the same from its neighbors,” he said, adding that no country has suffered more from terrorism than Pakistan, and regional peace is only possible through joint efforts and respect for each nation’s sovereignty.

On the issue of civil-military relations, the DG ISPR categorically stated that the Pakistan Army supports democracy and has no role in politics. “The military leadership has made it clear that it has no intention of interfering in political affairs. Political decisions must be made by the people and their elected representatives through constitutional means,” he said.

He also refuted allegations of military involvement in the 2024 general elections, asserting that the polls were held under the supervision of the Election Commission of Pakistan and in accordance with the Constitution. “There is zero tolerance for any unconstitutional activity, and the military’s mandate is to protect the state, not engage in politics,” he added.

Responding to a question on former Prime Minister Imran Khan, the DG ISPR stated that legal matters are handled by the courts, not the military. “The Pakistan Army has no personal enmity or alliance with any individual or party. No one is above the law.”

He further highlighted the sacrifices of security forces in the ongoing fight against terrorism. “Over 1500 soldiers and officers, including many young martyrs, have laid down their lives in the past year alone. This is a testament to our commitment to peace and stability,” he noted.

On relations with Iran and India, General Ahmed Sharif emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence. “We seek strong ties with all neighbors based on mutual respect and non-interference. However, any act of aggression will be met with a strong response,” he asserted.

The DG ISPR concluded by reiterating that Pakistan’s armed forces will continue to uphold their constitutional responsibilities and defend the nation against all internal and external threats.
