Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry has praised the Islamic Republic of Iran’s recent diplomatic efforts to ease rising tensions between Pakistan and India, warning of external forces attempting to sow discord between neighboring countries.

In an exclusive interview with Iranian news agency IRNA, DG ISPR expressed Pakistan’s deep gratitude to the international community, particularly to brotherly nations like Iran, for their constructive role during the recent regional crisis. “We are sincerely thankful to all who contributed to de-escalation efforts, especially the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he stated.

Tensions escalated rapidly earlier this month following a deadly attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir’s Pahalgam region, for which India hastily blamed Pakistan without presenting evidence. In response, Iran offered to mediate between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, emphasizing the need for restraint and diplomacy.

Highlighting Iran’s balanced and timely intervention, General Chaudhry noted that Pakistan and Iran share deep-rooted, historical ties and have always stood by each other during times of crisis. “It is important to recognize that certain elements—often supported by external actors—are working to drive a wedge between friendly nations,” he warned.

The DG ISPR also commended the recent visit of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to Islamabad, where the Iranian diplomat held high-level meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir. Following his visit to Pakistan, the Iranian foreign minister traveled to India, urging calm and a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

Discussing the importance of regional diplomacy, Lt. Gen. Chaudhry emphasized that Pakistan remains committed to peace and stability on all its borders and values Iran’s active role in promoting dialogue. “Our countries are neighbors and brothers, working together for lasting regional peace and cooperation,” he said.

The situation took a critical turn when, on the night of May 6–7, India launched a series of unprovoked air strikes targeting Pakistani territory. In a swift and calculated response, Pakistan’s Armed Forces shot down five Indian fighter jets. On May 10, Pakistan launched Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, targeting 26 Indian military installations with precision.

A ceasefire was eventually brokered later that evening through diplomatic intervention by U.S. President Donald Trump, preventing further escalation.

General Chaudhry reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining regional harmony, stating, “It is our consistent policy that the border regions should be peaceful, and we will continue to work with Tehran to uphold peace and mutual respect.”
