Will Taliban Choose Balance or Push Afghanistan Toward Tensions With Pakistan?

Pakistan has emphasized that while it respects Afghanistan’s sovereignty, independent foreign policy choices, and right to maintain diplomatic relations with other countries, the use of Afghan territory for activities detrimental to Pakistan’s security interests would represent a serious concern.

Pakistan acknowledges Afghanistan’s right, as a sovereign nation, to establish and maintain normal relations with regional and international partners. However, Islamabad has drawn a clear distinction between diplomatic engagement and participation in strategic arrangements that could undermine regional stability or create security challenges for neighboring states.

Pakistan has expressed concerns over the continued presence and activities of anti-Pakistan militant groups operating from Afghan soil. Islamabad has repeatedly maintained that security, peace, and stability in the region depend on ensuring that no territory is used against another country and that legitimate security concerns of neighboring states are addressed through cooperation and dialogue.

Officials and analysts note that Afghanistan’s future stability depends on pursuing balanced relations with all regional countries, promoting economic cooperation, strengthening connectivity, and avoiding policies that could deepen existing regional rivalries.

Pakistan has reiterated that it supports a peaceful, stable, and independent Afghanistan and remains committed to constructive engagement aimed at enhancing trade, connectivity, and mutual cooperation. However, Islamabad has also emphasized that regional partnerships must not come at the cost of Pakistan’s security or become a source of strategic tension.

Pakistan believes that a stable Afghanistan, committed to peaceful coexistence and responsible regional engagement, can contribute significantly to economic development and long-term peace in the region. The responsibility now lies with Afghan authorities to pursue policies that prioritize stability, mutual respect, and the interests of the Afghan people and neighboring countries.

Pakistan has reaffirmed that it seeks peaceful relations with Afghanistan but will continue to safeguard its national security interests and take necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and the safety of its citizens.
