United Nations Notes a Series of Significant TTP Assaults Targeting Pakistan

The United Nations Security Council’s 1267 Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee has issued a strong warning regarding the escalating threat posed by Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has carried out multiple high-profile attacks across Pakistan resulting in significant casualties.

Briefing the Council, Ambassador Sandra Jensen Landi of Denmark, Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN and Chair of the 1267 Sanctions Committee, reported that the TTP  comprising nearly 6,000 fighters  remains a serious regional threat and continues to receive logistical and financial support from the Taliban’s interim administration in Afghanistan.

Addressing the session, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Usman Jadoon, reaffirmed Pakistan’s role as a frontline state in the global fight against terrorism. He noted that Pakistan has sacrificed more than 80,000 lives and suffered billions of dollars in economic losses as part of its efforts against terrorism.

Jadoon highlighted that Pakistan’s security forces and law-enforcement agencies remain fully engaged in countering threats emerging from Afghanistan, where groups including Daesh-Khorasan, TTP, and associated organizations such as the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its Majeed Brigade continue to operate with the support of their hosts and with backing from a neighboring state intent on destabilizing the region.

Underscoring the importance of credibility and fairness in the global counterterrorism architecture, Jadoon urged that the 1267 Sanctions Regime must reflect ground realities. He stressed that listing or delisting decisions must be undertaken with transparency, impartiality, and free from political considerations.

He further emphasized the need for the UN’s counterterrorism framework to be equipped with effective tools to combat violent and extremist groups.

Representing China, the Chinese delegate called on the committee to support the inclusion of the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its Majeed Brigade in the UN’s list of designated terrorist organizations, describing it as essential to sending a powerful message of zero tolerance toward terrorism.
