Taliban Abuses Ignite Public Revolt in Nuristan: Residents Take to the Streets, Refuse to Endure Repression Any Longer

Public anger has erupted in Waygal district of Afghanistan’s Nuristan province after local Taliban personnel allegedly beat and humiliated a young man simply for wearing headphones, triggering a public demonstration that was reportedly met with further violence and intimidation by Taliban forces.

According to local sources cited by Afghanistan International on Saturday, 31 October, residents gathered in the district’s central village to protest the alleged mistreatment and demand accountability from the Taliban authorities.

The incident reportedly began when Taliban personnel assaulted a young man for using headphones. In response, the victim’s relatives and other residents approached the Waygal district police headquarters seeking an explanation and justice for the alleged abuse.

However, rather than addressing their grievances, Taliban personnel allegedly subjected the relatives and residents to further mistreatment, escalating tensions and prompting a wider public demonstration.

Eyewitnesses reported that Taliban forces violently dispersed the protesters, beating demonstrators with rifle butts. A video obtained by Afghanistan International reportedly shows residents gathered outside the Waygal district police headquarters.

Local residents identified the personnel allegedly involved as members of a group affiliated with Imran Jawhari, younger brother of Osman Jawhari, a former Taliban military official in Laghman province who served in Alingar and Alishing districts.

According to local sources, the individuals involved are stationed at the Waygal district police headquarters and have repeatedly mistreated residents of the area.

Villagers have expressed growing frustration over what they describe as persistent harassment, intimidation and abuse by local Taliban personnel, raising serious concerns about the treatment of civilians under the authorities exercising control over the district.
