Shocking Abuse Case Exposes Afghan Taliban’s Hypocrisy and Impunity

A disturbing incident has surfaced from Jalalabad, Nangarhar, where a Taliban-appointed religious cleric, Mufti Waliullah, allegedly sexually assaulted a student. The crime was uncovered after a video recording was retrieved from the cleric’s smartphone, according to a report by a prominent Afghan private media outlet circulating on social media.

Former Afghan MP Maryam Suleiman Khil confirmed the incident, stating that she personally verified the case. However, instead of punishing or dismissing the cleric, the Taliban authorities reportedly opted to quietly transfer him to another location — a move seen as a deliberate attempt to cover up the abuse.

In a strongly worded tweet, Suleiman Khil called on the United Nations and child rights organizations to urgently take notice of the situation, accusing the Taliban of shielding perpetrators and suppressing justice.

This incident adds to the growing list of human rights violations under Taliban rule, raising serious concerns about the safety of children and the culture of impunity in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
