A Taliban security outpost in Afghanistan’s northeastern Badakhshan province reportedly came under a rocket attack late Wednesday, marking another incident amid an apparent rise in anti-Taliban armed activity in the province.
According to informed local sources, the attack targeted a Taliban checkpoint at the Argo crossroads in Faizabad, near Badakhshan University. Shortly after the explosion, intermittent gunfire was reportedly heard from the area, suggesting a brief exchange of fire or a subsequent security response.
No casualties have been officially confirmed, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The latest incident comes against the backdrop of increasing attacks on Taliban positions across Badakhshan in recent weeks. Local sources say anti-Taliban armed groups have carried out a series of operations in several districts, including Yaftal, Darayim, Zebak, Kashm, and other parts of the province, indicating a noticeable escalation in armed resistance.
Security sources further indicate that the Taliban have begun reinforcing their presence in Badakhshan in response to the deteriorating security situation. Additional fighters have reportedly been deployed to the province, while senior Taliban commanders are said to have arrived to oversee security arrangements and prepare for a broader counteroperation against armed opposition groups.
Badakhshan, which shares borders with Tajikistan, China, and Pakistan, has witnessed periodic clashes between Taliban forces and anti-Taliban factions since the group’s return to power. The recent increase in attacks suggests that the province remains one of the key theatres of armed resistance to Taliban rule, with both sides appearing to be preparing for a prolonged confrontation.
