Prominent Tribal Elder Malik Muhammad Rehman Shot Dead in North Waziristan

Prominent tribal elder Malik Muhammad Rehman was shot dead while his driver sustained serious injuries after unidentified assailants opened fire on his vehicle along the Mir Ali–Miranshah Road, in what officials described as a targeted attack by Khawarij. According to police, the incident occurred near Pir Kalay when Malik Rehman was en route from Bannu to Miranshah. Armed assailants ambushed his vehicle, firing multiple rounds that fatally struck the elder and left his driver wounded. The attackers managed to flee the scene.

Security forces and police arrived swiftly after the incident, cordoning off the area and launching a search operation to apprehend the perpetrators. “This was a calculated and cowardly attack, and all efforts are underway to bring those responsible to justice,” a senior police official said.

Malik Muhammad Rehman was a widely respected figure in the tribal belt, known for his longstanding role in conflict resolution, community leadership, and peace efforts in North Waziristan. His assassination has sent shockwaves through the region, drawing condemnation from local elders, political figures, and civil society representatives.

The attack marks yet another attempt by the Khawarij to silence voices of peace and sow fear among the tribal populace. Residents have demanded immediate action and greater security to protect community leaders working for stability in the area.

Funeral prayers for the slain elder were held in his native village amid a large gathering of mourners. Tributes poured in from across the tribal districts, with many calling for unity against extremist elements and stronger governmental resolve to eliminate such threats.
