Reports have emerged of multiple mortar shells landing in various areas of Landi Kotal, along the Pak-Afghan Torkham border, escalating tensions once again on the western frontier.
According to local sources, mortars were fired from across the border targeting locations near Status Zargaran village, Bacha Mina Torkham and Sarkai hills.
There are no confirmed human casualties so far, although a stray dog was killed by a bullet in Zargaran. The sudden bombardment has spread fear and alarm among local residents.
Security officials said that following the cross-border firing, Pakistani forces responded with a strong and effective retaliatory response to secure the area and prevent further spillover.
Ongoing Security Situation
The incident comes against the backdrop of continuing instability in Afghanistan, where recent military operations have significantly impacted militant infrastructure.
In a major offensive known as Operation Ghazab Lil Haqq, Afghan forces carried out precision airstrikes and ground operations across multiple insurgent strongholds.
According to reports from operational sources:
At least 352 Taliban militants were killed and over 535 wounded in combined air and ground strikes.
130 Taliban checkpoints were destroyed, disrupting key supply and command routes.
171 tanks and armored vehicles were knocked out, degrading insurgent mechanized capacity.
Afghan forces captured 26 Taliban positions, gaining control of strategic areas.
A total of 41 militant sites were hit in coordinated air operations.
While this operation has been described by Afghan command as a significant strategic blow to Taliban capabilities, analysts caution that there is no assurance these groups will not attempt to regroup or retaliate.
Border Dynamics and Internal Taliban Rift
Recent reports from Afghan media also indicate emerging internal divisions within the Taliban, particularly between Kandahari and Kabul factions. Official sources in Pakistan have not confirmed leadership fatalities, but government statements note heightened tension among militant ranks.
Some accounts suggest airstrikes in areas such as Spin Boldak have eliminated key commanders, potentially deepening factional rivalries. These internal disputes could have implications for regional stability, especially given the porous nature of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
Security Response and Vigilance
Amid these developments, Pakistani security agencies have reiterated that they are maintaining vigilant monitoring of the western frontier. Officials said:
“Pakistan reserves the right to take all necessary measures to safeguard its territorial integrity and protect its citizens from externally sponsored terrorism.”
Precision operations have reportedly targeted militant hideouts linked to groups accused of facilitating cross-border attacks. Security sources insist these actions are focused on neutralizing imminent threats while avoiding civilian harm.
The ongoing conflict in Afghanistan and associated cross-border tensions have kept the region’s security landscape volatile. Continued clashes, strategic offensives and internal militant fragmentation contribute to an unstable environment that carries implications for Pakistan’s border provinces.
