An investigation report into the terrorist attack on the Khazana Checkpost in Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has revealed significant details regarding the planning, tactics, and resources used by the attackers during the assault.
According to the findings of the investigation, the attackers carried out a highly coordinated operation using advanced technology and a pre-planned strategy to target the police checkpost. The report revealed that the terrorists used modern thermal technology during the night operation, enabling them to monitor the movement and positions of police personnel in darkness and improve the effectiveness of their attack.
The investigation determined that approximately 100 terrorists participated in the attack, operating under the command of a wanted terrorist commander. The attackers were equipped with advanced weapons and utilized specialized equipment, including sniper rifles and quadcopters, which were reportedly used for surveillance, reconnaissance, and operational support during the assault.
The report highlighted that the attack was not limited to the police checkpost itself. The attackers had also developed a strategy to target the police reinforcement team that was dispatched to support the personnel under attack. As part of their planned operation, the terrorists established ambush positions from three different directions, aiming to inflict maximum casualties on arriving security personnel.
Investigators revealed that the attackers had positioned themselves at multiple locations spread across a distance of approximately two to three kilometers, creating a layered ambush arrangement designed to block and target any immediate assistance reaching the checkpost.
The investigation report also acknowledged the courage and resilience displayed by police personnel who, despite limited resources and facing a heavily armed assault, continued to resist the attackers for an extended period. Their determined response prevented the attackers from achieving their objectives quickly and demonstrated the commitment of law enforcement personnel in defending their positions against overwhelming odds.
However, the intensity of the attack resulted in significant casualties, with 10 police personnel martyred and 32 others injured during the engagement.
The comprehensive investigation reviewed multiple aspects of the incident, including the attackers’ planning and operational methods, existing security arrangements, intelligence coordination, emergency response mechanisms, and recommendations to prevent similar attacks in the future.
Following the findings of the report, authorities have decided to further accelerate action against those responsible for the attack as well as their facilitators and support networks. Security measures in the affected area have also been strengthened to prevent future attempts by hostile elements and ensure the protection of law enforcement personnel and local communities.
The findings underscore the evolving nature of terrorist tactics and highlight the importance of enhanced intelligence coordination, technological preparedness, and continued operational vigilance to counter emerging security threats.
