Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN Headquarters, reaffirming Pakistan’s enduring commitment to multilateralism, international peace, and the UN’s central role in addressing today’s global challenges. Secretary-General Guterres commended Pakistan’s constructive leadership and active engagement during its current presidency of the United Nations Security Council.
During the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering resolve to strengthen the multilateral system and to uphold the UN Charter in its entirety. He underscored Pakistan’s consistent support for the peaceful resolution of conflicts, advancement of sustainable development, and protection of fundamental human rights for all. “Pakistan stands firmly for diplomacy, dialogue, and the peaceful settlement of disputes, as envisioned by the UN Charter,” Dar said.
Highlighting Pakistan’s current presidency of the Security Council, Dar pointed to the convening of high-level sessions on multilateralism and conflict resolution, as well as the UN-OIC cooperation meeting, as evidence of Pakistan’s active and principled diplomacy. “These deliberations reflect Pakistan’s strong commitment to strengthening the rules-based international order and global peace,” he added.
Deputy Prime Minister Dar raised several issues of critical national and regional concern. He strongly emphasized the urgent need for a just and lasting resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions. He also expressed serious concern over India’s violations of the Indus Waters Treaty and the growing threat of externally-sponsored terrorism on Pakistani soil. He acknowledged and appreciated the Secretary-General’s leadership and sincere efforts to de-escalate recent tensions between Pakistan and India.
Turning to the Middle East, Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s principled and unwavering support for the establishment of an independent and viable Palestinian state. He called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and condemned Israel’s illegal annexation plans in the occupied West Bank.
Both leaders exchanged views on broader global development and climate finance challenges. Dar stressed the urgent need for soft financial packages, debt restructuring, and liquidity solutions to support developing countries, particularly in the Global South, in achieving sustainable development and climate targets. He welcomed the Secretary-General’s “UN80” initiative as a pivotal opportunity to revitalize the UN’s foundational pillars: peace and security, development, and human rights.
Dar also welcomed the recent appointment of the UN Special Envoy on Islamophobia, describing it as a vital step in countering rising religious intolerance. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s full support for global efforts to eliminate Islamophobia and promote interfaith harmony.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of Pakistan and the United Nations to a peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable world order rooted in international law and multilateral cooperation.
