Azerbaijan Thwarts ISIS-K Plot Targeting Foreign Embassy in Baku

The State Security Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan announced on Tuesday that it has successfully prevented a planned terrorist attack targeting a foreign embassy in the capital city of Baku, following the arrest of three individuals acting under the direction of the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP).

According to an official statement released by the State Security Service, the suspects whose identities have been disclosed by authorities were apprehended during a coordinated counterterrorism operation after intelligence revealed their involvement in an advanced plot to carry out an attack on a foreign diplomatic mission.

Investigators determined that the individuals had established direct links with members of ISIS-K and had conspired to commit an act of terrorism motivated by religious extremism. The suspects reportedly obtained weapons and conducted preparatory activities with the intent to carry out the planned attack before being intercepted by Azerbaijani security forces.

The three men have been formally charged with “preparation for terrorism” on the grounds of religious hostility, in accordance with Azerbaijani law. Authorities confirmed that the arrests were carried out in a timely manner, preventing any harm to diplomatic personnel, civilians, or critical infrastructure.

The State Security Service emphasized that the operation reflects Azerbaijan’s continued vigilance and zero-tolerance approach toward terrorism, violent extremism, and threats to national and international security. The agency reiterated its commitment to safeguarding foreign diplomatic missions operating within the country and ensuring the safety of all residents and visitors.

The investigation remains ongoing, with law enforcement authorities continuing to examine potential additional connections, sources of support, and any broader networks linked to the suspects. Further information will be released as it becomes available and as operational considerations allow.

Azerbaijan continues to cooperate closely with international partners in counterterrorism efforts and remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding global security and stability.
