Pakistan has clarified that Operation Bunyān al-Marsūs, launched in response to recent Indian hostilities, was a measured and proportionate defensive action targeting only those Indian sites directly involved in acts of aggression against Pakistan.
In a statement issued by Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan, Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to regional stability while emphasizing that any ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and India must be understood in its proper context.
The spokesperson revealed that the Indian military had launched BrahMos missile attacks inside Pakistani territory, prompting a legitimate act of self-defence by Pakistan under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. Operation Bunyān al-Marsūs was initiated following these violations.
“Between May 7 and 10, India conducted multiple strikes resulting in the tragic loss of innocent lives, including women and children,” Shafqat Ali Khan said, adding that Indian aggression damaged civilian infrastructure, including places of worship, and extended to the use of lethal drones targeting both civilian and military assets, even in the federal capital.
He noted that in light of mounting public pressure, Pakistan was compelled to respond swiftly. However, the response was carefully calibrated: precise, limited in scope, and aimed at avoiding civilian casualties.
“Only those Indian positions were targeted from where aggression against Pakistan originated,” the spokesperson stressed, underscoring Pakistan’s adherence to international norms in exercising its right to self-defence.
