The Taliban’s Supreme Court has confirmed the public flogging of a man and a woman in the Sancharak district of Sar-e Pol province after they were convicted of engaging in an extramarital relationship. The punishment was carried out on Monday, April 7, in front of local residents.
According to an official statement, the individuals, who were sentenced to three months in prison, each received 10 lashes as part of their punishment. The Taliban authorities maintain that such sentences are implemented in accordance with “Sharia law.”
However, the group has faced ongoing criticism for its lack of transparency, with the Supreme Court failing to provide specifics regarding the legal procedures or evidence behind the convictions in these cases. This incident highlights continuing concerns over the application of justice under the Taliban’s interpretation of Islamic law.
