At least 47 people, most of them children, were injured in an explosion in Kabul’s western Dasht-e-Barchi area on Monday, according to local sources. Several of those wounded were taken to hospitals for treatment, while the initial casualty figure is expected to rise.
Sources said 17 injured people were transferred to Imam Zaman Hospital, 23 to Alami Hospital, four to Istiqlal Hospital and three others to Karbala Hero Clinic.
Additional wounded people were reportedly taken to Mohammad Ali Jinnah Hospital and Child Health Hospitals. The exact number of patients admitted to those facilities has not yet been established.
Earlier, residents in Kabul reported hearing an explosion near a school in Dasht-e-Barchi. Local sources said the blast occurred near Candle of Guidance Private School in the Mahdia area.
There is currently no confirmed information about what caused the explosion or whether the number of casualties will increase. The Taliban have not yet issued a statement regarding the incident.
Dasht-e-Barchi, a predominantly Hazara and Shia neighborhood in western Kabul, has experienced several deadly attacks in recent years. The Islamic State-Khorasan (ISKP) has claimed responsibility for some of the attacks in the area.
