Authorities in Bannu have signalled an intensification of intelligence-based counterterrorism operations, with police saying the scope of targeted actions against terrorists and criminal elements will be expanded to strengthen security across the district.
The latest indication came after a joint intelligence-based operation by Bannu District Police, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Quick Response Force and security forces in Khani Kalay, Barkzai and surrounding areas within the jurisdiction of Mariyan police station.
The operation, conducted under the supervision of District Police Officer Bannu Captain (retd) Muhammad Furqan Bilal, resulted in an exchange of fire in which an unidentified terrorist was killed. His identity was being ascertained, officials said.
A Kalashnikov, three magazines and a bandolier were recovered from the slain militant, according to police.
The operation also involved searches and raids in the surrounding area, during which 10 suspects were detained for questioning. Police said two .303 rifles, two pistols and a repeater shotgun were recovered from their possession.
The latest action highlights the increasing reliance on intelligence-led operations in Bannu, where law enforcement and security agencies are seeking to move beyond reactive measures and disrupt suspected militant activity through targeted searches and coordinated raids.
DPO Bilal said the scope of intelligence-based operations would be expanded and the pace of action against terrorism and crime accelerated as part of efforts to establish lasting peace in Bannu.
He praised personnel from the district police, CTD, Quick Response Force and security forces for carrying out the operation, saying those engaged in counterterrorism efforts were performing their duties with courage, dedication and determination.
The police chief also called on residents to support law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious individuals or activities in their areas.
The latest operation comes as Bannu continues to face security challenges, placing greater emphasis on intelligence gathering, inter-agency coordination and targeted action against suspected terrorist networks.
Authorities said operations against terrorism and crime would continue without discrimination until the threats were eliminated.
