Tribal elders in Khyber district have announced a grassroots movement against terrorism, declaring that they will continue their campaign until lasting peace is restored across the region.

The announcement came during a protest on a key highway where tribal leaders challenged terrorists operating in the area and stressed that their objective was not merely to block roads, but to draw attention to the deteriorating security situation and the urgent need for peace.

Speaking to participants, the elders said the region has witnessed a disturbing rise in kidnappings, intimidation and violence targeting local residents, including youth, children and respected members of society. According to the speakers, fear is being deliberately spread to create space for anti-peace elements to continue unlawful and unconstitutional activities.

The tribal leaders expressed concern over reports of abductions, threats against local communities and incidents affecting women and families, describing the situation as a direct challenge to the writ of the state and the rule of law.

They announced the launch of a formal peace movement, stating that the campaign would continue until tangible improvements in security are achieved and residents can live without fear.

“We closed roads and suspended movement to send a message that the entire community must unite for peace,” one elder said, clarifying that the protest was not limited to the recovery of abducted children but was aimed at highlighting broader security concerns affecting the area.

The elders further stressed that protecting the dignity, safety and rights of women must remain a collective priority, adding that silence in the face of intimidation and violence would only embolden those seeking to destabilize the region.

The development comes as security forces continue counterterrorism operations across various parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while local communities increasingly voice support for stronger action against terrorist networks and criminal elements operating in tribal districts.

Community leaders maintained that peace, development and stability can only be achieved through close cooperation between local residents, tribal elders and state institutions, warning that continued insecurity threatens both social cohesion and economic activity in the region.
