Prominent Religious Scholar Shot Dead in Targeted Attack in Charsadda; Two Policemen Injured

A prominent religious scholar, Maulana Muhammad Idris, was killed in a targeted shooting incident in the Utmanzai area of Charsadda district on Tuesday, according to local sources and hospital officials.

The attack occurred near a funeral ground in Utmanzai, where unidentified assailants opened fire on the scholar. Maulana Muhammad Idris, who was widely recognized as a respected Sheikh-ul-Hadith, sustained critical injuries in the assault and was immediately shifted to District Headquarters Hospital Charsadda.

Despite emergency medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival at the hospital. Medical officials confirmed his death, describing his condition upon arrival as critical due to multiple gunshot wounds.

Two police constables assigned to his security detail were also seriously injured in the attack. They are currently receiving treatment, and their condition has been described as severe but stable by hospital authorities.

Law enforcement agencies have cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into what appears to be a targeted assassination. No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, and the motives behind the killing remain under investigation.

Officials have strongly condemned the incident, terming it a “heinous act of violence” and vowing to bring those responsible to justice. Security has been heightened across the district following the incident, particularly around religious institutions and public gatherings.

Maulana Muhammad Idris was regarded as an influential religious figure with a significant following in the region. His death is expected to draw widespread reaction from religious circles and the broader community.
