In a significant diplomatic development aimed at de-escalating tensions in the Gulf and the broader Middle East, the governments of the People’s Republic of China and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan have jointly unveiled a comprehensive five-point initiative to restore peace, stability, and regional cooperation.
The proposal was announced following a high-level meeting in Beijing between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Both leaders reaffirmed their countries’ shared commitment to diplomacy, multilateralism, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
The five-point initiative outlines a structured and principled approach to addressing the ongoing crisis:
1. Immediate Ceasefire
China and Pakistan have called for an urgent and unconditional ceasefire by all involved parties. Emphasizing the critical need to prevent further escalation, both countries underscored the importance of ensuring unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance to affected populations.
2. Launch of Inclusive Peace Talks
Reiterating that dialogue remains the only viable path to lasting peace, the two nations urged all stakeholders to engage in constructive negotiations. Respect for sovereignty particularly of regional states including Iran and Gulf countries—was highlighted as a fundamental principle, alongside a firm rejection of threats or the use of force.
3. Protection of Civilians and Critical Infrastructure
The initiative stresses strict adherence to international humanitarian law. All parties are called upon to avoid targeting civilians and vital infrastructure, including energy installations and nuclear facilities, thereby minimizing human suffering and preventing catastrophic consequences.
4. Safeguarding Maritime Security
Recognizing the global economic significance of regional waterways, special emphasis was placed on ensuring the safety and security of maritime routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal calls for immediate measures to protect commercial shipping and restore normal maritime traffic.
5. Upholding the Role of the United Nations
China and Pakistan reaffirmed their strong support for the United Nations and its central role in facilitating peace efforts. The initiative calls for a comprehensive and lasting resolution grounded in the principles of the UN Charter and international law.
Both sides emphasized that peace and stability in the Gulf and Middle East are essential not only for regional security but also for global economic resilience. They reiterated their readiness to work with the international community to advance diplomatic efforts and promote a peaceful, just, and sustainable resolution to ongoing conflicts.
This joint initiative reflects a broader commitment by China and Pakistan to act as responsible stakeholders in international peacebuilding, advocating cooperation over confrontation and dialogue over discord.
