The Afghan freedom movement, Jabhat al-Ribat, has officially declared jihad against the Taliban regime and expressed its support for anti-Taliban forces operating across Afghanistan. In a detailed statement, the group reported intense clashes in Helmand province, underscoring the escalating tensions between Taliban forces and insurgent factions.
According to Jabhat al-Ribat, the confrontations involved fighters from the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, operatives linked to Al-Qaeda, and members of Jabhat al-Ribat itself. The group claimed that hostilities began after Taliban authorities relocated a significant number of Al-Qaeda operatives to covert positions within the region, allegedly prompting retaliatory action.
The movement further stated that at least two Al-Qaeda operatives were killed during these clashes. While the group did not disclose additional casualty figures, it emphasized that operations were ongoing and highlighted the complexity of the security situation in Helmand.
In a broader political context, Jabhat al-Ribat announced its backing for other factions opposing Taliban rule, including the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan, the Afghanistan Freedom Front, and Jabhat al-Istiqlal. This declaration signals a potential consolidation among anti-Taliban elements, indicating a more coordinated effort to challenge Taliban authority across multiple provinces.
The statement reflects the deepening security and political crisis in Afghanistan, where multiple factions are vying for influence and attempting to resist Taliban control. Analysts note that such developments could intensify regional instability and further complicate international efforts to engage with Afghanistan’s current authorities.
