Old Photos and Staged Claims Expose Afghan Misinformation on Kabul Strike

Following reports of a Pakistani strike on Kabul, claims circulating regarding damage to Omeed Hospital and civilian casualties are fundamentally contradicted by available evidence, raising serious concerns over widespread misinformation.

An independent review of the evidence reveals several discrepancies:

  • Misdated Imagery: A photo shared by Afghan regime officials to support claims of recent casualties is three years old, originally published by the Afghan Interior Ministry in early 2023. The image does not reflect any recent event. Link

  • Incorrect Target Identification: Afghan accounts have attempted to conflate the civilian 2000-bed Omeed Hospital with the actual strike location. The hospital, located in a densely populated residential area, remains untouched. The strike instead targeted Sarshar Camp Omid, the former U.S. military installation previously known as Camp Phoenix.

  • Staged Media Claims: Afghan sources have claimed that an entire building was destroyed; however, shared photos show the hospital’s signboard and flag intact. The physical improbability of such destruction occurring while leaving key features undamaged strongly suggests staged imagery.

In addition, misinformation has proliferated through social media. For instance, a photograph of a group of individuals shared by Taliban spokesperson Mr. Mujahed, claiming that they were “mostly killed,” is from April 5, 2023, and originally posted by the Taliban’s own Ministry of Interior. It is implausible that these exact individuals remained under treatment in the hospital and were casualties of the recent strike.

This pattern of misleading information demonstrates a coordinated effort to distort facts regarding the incident, further endangering the credibility of reporting and public understanding.

Authorities and independent observers urge the Taliban regime to allow neutral media access to investigate this event thoroughly. Full documentation of civilian casualties and verification of claims are essential to ensure transparency and maintain trust in the reporting of sensitive incidents.

Pakistan remains committed to precision targeting of legitimate military sites and emphasizes the importance of accurate reporting and independent verification to prevent misinformation from spreading in conflict zones.
