China will construct nine new border infrastructure facilities along the Tajikistan–Afghanistan border, according to reports from Kazinform. The initiative aims to bolster Tajikistan’s border security and strengthen regional stability along this sensitive frontier.
The Tajik parliament approved the agreement on Thursday, paving the way for the project. It is designed to enhance the technical and operational capabilities of Tajik border forces and will include the construction of modern buildings equipped with advanced surveillance systems, communication networks, and other essential support infrastructure.
The total construction area for the nine facilities is expected to cover approximately 17,000 square meters, with an estimated cost of over 424.8 million Chinese yuan. Funding for the project will be provided entirely by the Chinese government, according to Muradali Rajabzoda, First Deputy Chairman of Tajikistan’s State Committee for National Security.
“This project represents a continuation of the strong security cooperation between China and Tajikistan,” Rajabzoda said. “Under a previous agreement with Beijing, 12 similar border facilities were successfully built between 2017 and 2018, enhancing Tajikistan’s capacity to monitor and control its borders effectively.”
The new initiative is expected to significantly improve Tajikistan’s ability to detect and respond to cross-border threats, particularly along the frontier with Afghanistan, where security challenges have increased due to regional instability. The enhanced infrastructure will also support rapid communication and coordination among Tajik border units, helping to prevent illegal crossings and strengthen counter-terrorism measures.
The project underscores the growing strategic and security partnership between China and Tajikistan and reflects Beijing’s continued commitment to supporting regional stability through infrastructure development and technical assistance.
