A major terror plot was foiled in Bannu after police successfully defused a roadside improvised explosive device planted along a busy public highway, averting what officials described as potential large-scale destruction.
The device was recovered within the jurisdiction of Mandan Police Station on the Bazid Tughalkhel stretch of the Kaki Bannu Road, a frequently used artery connecting residential clusters and commercial traffic routes.
According to police officials, Mandan police received credible intelligence regarding a bomb planted along the roadside. Acting swiftly, SDPO Rural-I Arshad Khan, along with Mandan police personnel, reached the site and cordoned off the area to prevent civilian movement, as the location lies on a public highway with regular traffic flow.
The Bomb Disposal Squad was subsequently called in. Using specialized equipment and controlled procedures, the team safely neutralized the improvised explosive device.
Officials said the bomb was concealed inside a plastic bucket and contained more than five kilograms of explosive material. Two detonators, a 12-volt battery, and a circuit mechanism were also recovered from the device, indicating a remote-controlled detonation system designed for maximum impact.
Security officials noted that the quantity of explosives suggested an intent to target civilian traffic or security convoys passing through the route. The timely intervention prevented potential casualties and infrastructure damage.
DIG Bannu Sajjad Khan and DPO Bannu Yasir Afridi commended the police team for their prompt and professional response, stating that planting explosives at public locations reflects the malicious intent of terrorist elements to create fear and instability.
DIG Sajjad Khan urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, emphasizing that public cooperation is critical in identifying hostile elements embedded within communities.
Search operations in adjacent areas have been intensified as part of follow-up security measures, while investigations are underway to trace those responsible for planting the device.
