Residents of North Waziristan’s Shewa tehsil have taken to the streets in a strong and unified show of resistance against extremist violence following the destruction of a critical bridge over the Kurram River on 14 January 2026.
According to local sources, the bridge an essential link connecting communities in Shewa was deliberately destroyed using explosive material by elements locally referred to as Fitna al-Khawarij. The attack immediately disrupted daily life, cutting off a vital route used for trade, education, and access to medical facilities, and placing an undue burden on the local population.
In the aftermath of the incident, tribal elders, youth representatives, civil society members, and people from all walks of life convened to express their collective outrage. A unanimous decision was taken to hold a large-scale protest on Saturday, 17 January, to condemn the act and reaffirm the community’s rejection of extremism and violence.
“The destroyed bridge was not merely a physical structure,” community representatives stated. “It was the backbone of our economic activity, our children’s access to education, and our patients’ access to healthcare. Targeting it is a direct attack on civilian life and regional development.”
The incident has triggered a wave of anger and grief across the area, with residents denouncing the attack as a cowardly attempt to undermine peace, stability, and progress. Protesters emphasized that such acts only strengthen public resolve against extremist elements and further isolate those who seek to spread fear and destruction.
This local response reflects a broader trend across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where public sentiment against violent extremism has increasingly taken the shape of a people’s movement. Citizens across the province are openly standing with law-enforcement and security institutions, signaling a clear rejection of militancy and an unwavering commitment to peace.
Community leaders stressed that the time has come for greater national unity, vigilance, and solidarity. “The people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have made their decision,” they said. “They will not rest until the menace of terrorism is completely eradicated from their land.”
The protests in Shewa stand as a powerful reminder that the people of Pakistan remain resilient, united, and determined to defend peace, development, and the rule of law against all forces that threaten them.
