Gianni Tognoni, secretary of the People’s Tribunal, has called for building a unified international consensus against the Taliban over their systematic repression of Afghan women and girls.
Speaking at the tribunal proceedings, Tognoni emphasized that once sufficient evidence is presented, a global support network should be established to ensure continuous monitoring of the situation of women in Afghanistan. The goal, he noted, is to hold the Taliban accountable and prevent the group from continuing its actions with impunity.
Tognoni stated that the ongoing review of the Taliban’s policies amounts to exposing crimes against humanity and represents an unprecedented challenge to international law. He stressed the importance of formal recognition and decriminalisation of these acts on the global stage.
Describing the current conditions under Taliban rule as a form of gender apartheid, Tognoni said that international oversight mechanisms must be strengthened to address widespread violations of women’s rights.
He urged the global community to view the Taliban’s treatment of women not as an isolated or internal matter, but as a direct violation of universal human rights and international legal norms.
Tognoni concluded by calling for unified public pressure and governmental accountability, stating that the world must rally behind Afghan women and ensure the Taliban are held responsible for their actions.
