We Will Not Back Down; Terrorists Will Be Pursued Wherever They Go: IG KP

Inspector General (IG) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, Zulfiqar Hameed, has said that the provincial police force remains on the front-line in the fight against terrorism and is fully prepared to confront any threat. Speaking to senior journalists, he revealed that a recent major terrorist attack on a police station in Bannu, carried out by 30 to 40 militants from three sides—was bravely repelled by police personnel, forcing the attackers to retreat. “Our officers have never backed down in the face of danger. Their courage must be recognised and encouraged—it is our national responsibility,” he stated.

The IG made these remarks during a special media briefing held in connection with Youm-e-Shuhada (Martyrs’ Day), a day observed annually to honour the sacrifices of police personnel. Families of the martyrs are invited to the commemorative events to acknowledge their loved ones’ service and to ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten. The IG also disclosed a partnership with a Karachi-based company to provide prosthetic limbs to officers injured in terror attacks. “Our commitment to our injured heroes goes beyond words, we are ensuring they return to a dignified and empowered life,” he said.

To meet the growing threat posed by terrorists armed with advanced weaponry, the police force is being equipped accordingly. Over PKR 950 million has already been spent from the Police Welfare Fund, and more funds are being allocated for the purchase of bulletproof vests, helmets, armoured vehicles, and signal jammers. Bulletproof vehicles have been provided to District Police Officers (DPOs) and Regional Police Officers (RPOs), while work is also underway to reinforce police stations and outposts across the province.

IG Hameed highlighted the continuing efforts to upgrade the province’s security infrastructure. He said that the Safe City project is progressing rapidly, with 40% of the work already completed. Once operational, the project will significantly enhance urban security. In parallel, efforts are being made to improve the efficiency of criminal investigations. Officers are receiving specialised training at the Judicial Academy to ensure stronger prosecutions and more effective delivery of justice.

Discussing the broader security landscape, the IG noted significant improvements in law and order in sensitive districts like Lakki Marwat and Tank. Continuous patrolling has been implemented in high-risk areas, and surveillance has intensified. “We do not only defend—we take action. God willing, we will soon bring terrorism under full control,” he asserted.

He further warned that anyone breaking the law, whether local or foreign, will face legal consequences. He admitted that many recent crimes had involved foreign nationals, particularly Afghan citizens.

“We are fully prepared. We will not back down,” IG Hameed said firmly. “While the military has its role, the police are fulfilling theirs independently. Wherever terrorists go, we will pursue them.”

He concluded by reaffirming that maintaining peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is his top priority. “Even in the worst of times, we have continued to invest in the police. That commitment will not waver.”
