In a strategic push to combat terrorism and rising urban crime, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police leadership reviewed progress on the Peshawar Safe City Project during a high-level briefing held today at the Central Police Office, Peshawar.

Project Director DIG Rai Ejaz Ahmad briefed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Zulfiqar Hameed, on the current implementation status of the mega security initiative. Senior police and government officials from various departments, including the KP IT Board, NRTC, and UET Peshawar, were present.

The IGP was informed that the installation of poles for surveillance cameras has begun in the city, and advance payments have already been made to the National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) to avoid delays in procurement and deployment of equipment.

Calling the project a “lifeline” for urban security, IGP Zulfiqar Hameed emphasised its critical role in neutralising terrorist threats and street crimes. He directed that no compromise be made on the quality of technology or execution. “The Safe City Project must be expedited and made fully operational to transform Peshawar into a crime-free and peaceful zone,” the IGP stated.

The project, he added, is not limited to Peshawar. Surveys have been completed in North Waziristan, Karak, and Tank, while PC-1 submissions for Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, and Lakki Marwat are awaiting approval. Once sanctioned, similar installations will be rolled out to extend the security network beyond the provincial capital.

The IGP also visited Peshawar Police Lines where he inspected the proposed building for the project’s Command and Control Centre. He issued further directives to senior officers, underscoring the urgency of operationalising the hub.

The Safe City initiative aims to leverage modern surveillance and analytics to detect, prevent, and respond to terror threats and criminal activity across key urban zones in KP, a province frequently targeted by cross-border terrorism.
