India Pursuing Dangerous Maritime Militarisation, Warns Pakistan’s UN Envoy

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Aamir Iftikhar Ahmad, has strongly cautioned the global community against India’s dangerous maritime militarisation and hegemonic ambitions, calling them a direct threat to regional peace and security.

Addressing a debate at the UN Security Council, Ambassador Aamir Iftikhar Ahmad said it was deeply alarming that a major regional power was actively pursuing unchecked naval expansion with the intent to dominate critical maritime routes and establish unchallenged supremacy in the Indian Ocean.

“India is systematically seeking maritime dominance under the guise of regional cooperation, while in reality attempting to reshape the strategic landscape in its favour,” he warned. “Its actions reflect an aggressive naval posture aimed at sidelining neighbouring states and consolidating control over vital sea lanes.”

He noted with particular concern that regional countries were being deliberately excluded from key maritime security platforms, such as the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), undermining the very principles of inclusivity and collective regional stability.

Ambassador Ahmad further accused India of weaponising shared rivers in clear violation of international water agreements. “India’s repeated attempts to manipulate river flows and use water as a coercive tool reflect a dangerous disregard for treaty obligations and regional trust,” he said.

Calling for urgent international attention, the Pakistani envoy urged the United Nations and the global community to take cognisance of India’s destabilising trajectory. He emphasised the need to uphold established maritime norms and safeguard shared water resources in accordance with international law to prevent further erosion of regional peace.
