UN Endorses Pakistan’s Initiatives on Arms Control and Nuclear Security

The United Nations General Assembly’s First Committee on Disarmament and International Security has adopted four resolutions sponsored by Pakistan, reaffirming the country’s long-standing commitment to regional and global disarmament, arms control, and nuclear security.

According to a statement issued by Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the approved resolutions include measures on regional disarmament, confidence-building, and assurances of nuclear security. Two of Pakistan’s resolutions—Regional Disarmament and Confidence-Building Measures in the Regional and Subregional Context were adopted by consensus, reflecting broad-based international support for Pakistan’s constructive approach.

The other two resolutions Conclusion of Effective International Arrangements to Assure Non-Nuclear-Weapon States Against the Use or Threat of Use of Nuclear Weapons and Conventional Arms Control at the Regional and Subregional Levels were adopted by an overwhelming majority of UN member states.

The statement underscored that for decades, Pakistan has led global efforts within the UN framework to advance priority issues related to nuclear disarmament, regional arms reduction, conventional arms control, and confidence-building initiatives.

Referring to the threat and use of nuclear weapons by nuclear-armed states, the Mission noted that the adoption of these resolutions reflects the international community’s shared priorities regarding negative security assurances and the importance of adopting a regional approach to disarmament and arms control.

Pakistan’s call for stronger confidence-building measures comes months after renewed tensions with India. Earlier, senior military commander General Sahir Shamshad Mirza had warned that recent hostilities between the two nuclear-armed neighbors had heightened the risk of future escalation.

The adoption of these resolutions marks a significant diplomatic achievement for Pakistan, reinforcing its constructive role in promoting international peace, stability, and responsible arms control within the United Nations framework.
