The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that American forces have successfully completed their planned withdrawal from the al-Tanf Garrison in Syria as of February 11, 2026. This move represents a deliberate, conditions-based transition led by the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR), reflecting the evolving operational posture of U.S. forces in the region.
Established in 2014, CJTF-OIR has provided critical advisory, assistance, and operational support to partner forces in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Following the territorial defeat of ISIS in 2019, the U.S. Department of Defense announced in April 2025 that American forces would begin consolidating their military positions in Syria while maintaining readiness to respond to emerging threats.
CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper emphasized that, despite the withdrawal, U.S. forces remain fully prepared to address any resurgence of ISIS. “Maintaining pressure on ISIS is essential to preventing the group’s revival and safeguarding both U.S. national security and regional stability,” Admiral Cooper said.
Over the past two months, U.S. forces have carried out more than 100 strikes on key ISIS targets, employing over 350 precision munitions. These operations have resulted in the capture or elimination of more than 50 ISIS members, disrupting the group’s ability to reconstitute and conduct attacks.
The withdrawal from al-Tanf reflects a strategic recalibration rather than a reduction in commitment to the defeat of ISIS. U.S. forces will continue to work closely with coalition partners, regional allies, and local forces to monitor threats, gather intelligence, and respond swiftly to any ISIS-related activity in Syria and the broader region.
CENTCOM reaffirmed that this transition aligns with a long-term strategy to sustain counterterrorism efforts while enabling partner forces to assume greater responsibility for regional security. The United States remains committed to supporting stability, counterterrorism operations, and humanitarian efforts throughout Syria and the region.
