Turkey Begins Military Training for Syrian Army Amid Renewed Focus on Counter terrorism and Stability

In a major strategic shift, Turkey has initiated military training and advisory support for the Syrian army, underscoring Ankara’s renewed commitment to institutional cooperation with Damascus in the fight against terrorism and the pursuit of regional stability. The development was confirmed by Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler in an interview with Reuters, where he announced that Turkish forces have begun delivering structured military training and consultation services to bolster Syria’s defence capabilities.

“We have begun delivering military training and advisory services and taken steps to strengthen Syria’s defensive capacity,” Güler said, signaling Turkey’s transition from unilateral military operations to direct support for Syrian state institutions. The initiative is seen as part of Ankara’s broader counter terrorism strategy aimed at neutralising threats emanating from northern Syria. Turkish forces have been involved in multiple cross-border operations over the years targeting groups it designates as terrorist organisations, including the PKK and its Syrian affiliate, the YPG.

Güler emphasized that Turkey’s enduring objectives in Syria remain the elimination of terrorist threats, the preservation of Syria’s territorial integrity, and the eventual return of Syrian refugees in a secure and dignified manner. “Our military presence in Syria is not permanent, but withdrawal will only be possible once complete peace and stability are achieved, terrorist threats are eradicated, and the safe return of displaced Syrians is guaranteed,” he stated.

Turkey currently maintains over 20,000 troops in northern Syria, where it has established a buffer zone through successive military campaigns. The presence, according to Ankara, is essential to ensuring regional security and preventing the resurgence of militant networks along its southern border.

In addition to its security efforts, Turkey has pledged to support reconstruction and civil administration in areas under its influence, facilitating the rehabilitation of infrastructure and public services for displaced communities.

The launch of formal training programs for the Syrian military reflects a calibrated approach by Ankara blending its security imperatives with institutional engagement. However, the path toward Turkish military withdrawal remains tied to measurable progress in counter terrorism, political reconciliation, and stability across Syria.
