U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed cautious optimism about the possibility of resolving the long-standing Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan, stating he will “work with both countries and see if a solution can finally emerge—even if it’s been thousands of years in the making.”

In a statement that has sparked international attention, President Trump addressed the recent tensions between the two South Asian nuclear powers and reiterated America’s commitment to helping both sides de-escalate and build a path toward lasting peace. “We will increase trade with both Pakistan and India,” Trump stated, adding, “I will work with them and see if maybe, after thousands of years, something positive can finally happen with Kashmir.”

Trump’s comments come in the wake of Pakistan’s forceful military response to Indian aggression, notably under Operation Bunyān al-Marsoos (Iron Wall), during which over ten high-value Indian targets were struck with precision. The Pakistani military action was widely seen as a calibrated and strategic response that shifted the dynamics on the ground—and in diplomatic circles.

In response to rising fears of full-scale war, the United States stepped in to mediate. Under Washington’s initiative and coordination with regional stakeholders—including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE—both countries agreed to an immediate ceasefire. Trump confirmed the breakthrough on his social media platform, saying, “Under U.S. mediation, India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire.”

Despite this agreement, scepticism remains high following India’s partial retreat from key terms of the ceasefire, particularly its refusal to participate in third-party-hosted negotiations. Nevertheless, Trump’s unusual yet hopeful framing of the Kashmir dispute—referring to its “thousands of years” of unresolved history—signals a renewed American willingness to engage where previous efforts have failed.

Analysts see Trump’s remarks as a blend of diplomatic ambition and political realism, acknowledging the complexity of the issue while attempting to play the role of global peacemaker in a volatile region.
