Three Flogged in Afghanistan as Taliban Expand Harsh Public Punishments

Taliban authorities in the Ruyi Du Ab district of Samangan province have flogged a woman and a man thirty times after accusing them of running away from home and engaging in moral corruption. Both individuals were sentenced to prison terms ranging from one to two years.

In a separate incident in Jowzjan province, Taliban officials flogged another person thirty nine times on a theft charge and issued a three month prison sentence.

The Taliban continue to arrest and publicly flog people on an almost daily basis across Afghanistan. International human rights organisations have condemned these actions as violations of human dignity and basic rights.

Rights groups say the absence of independent courts and legal institutions in Taliban controlled Afghanistan, combined with the lack of access to impartial oversight bodies, remains one of the most serious concerns under the current regime.
