Escalating terrorist activities originating from Tirah in Khyber District have raised serious security concerns for Peshawar, with recent attacks indicating the reactivation of organized networks linked to Afghan-based militants.
According to security sources, insurgents operating from Tirah have once again begun orchestrating attacks in Peshawar through well-established local networks. The distance between Tirah and Peshawar is approximately 70 kilometers, a journey of just two hours, highlighting the operational ease for these groups.
On November 24, 2025, Afghan militants involved in the attack on the Federal Constabulary Headquarters in Peshawar reportedly used routes through Tirah to carry out the operation. Two days later, on November 26, external elements linked to Tirah targeted a gas pipeline in the suburban area of Hasan Khel, Peshawar, with an improvised explosive device (IED).
Historically, Tirah has served as a stronghold for terrorist groups. The late TTP commander Hakimullah Mehsud had maintained his central headquarters in Tirah for a prolonged period, coordinating operations across the tribal belt, Peshawar, and other regions of the country. Investigations indicate that several Afghan nationals involved in recent attacks were connected to networks based in Tirah. The planning of the 2014 APS tragedy was also traced back to clandestine centers located in the region.
Security analysts warn that Tirah is emerging once again as a safe haven for extremist groups. Without immediate and effective action by provincial authorities, there is a serious risk of an increase in terrorist incidents across Peshawar and the wider Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Experts emphasize that any targeted operations in Tirah should include the temporary evacuation of local populations to ensure civilian safety. The region is also closely linked to critical terror–crime networks, underscoring the urgent need for decisive action.
Authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are urged to implement strict and immediate counterterrorism measures to prevent Peshawar and surrounding areas from being increasingly exposed to terrorist threats.
