Sultankhel Tribal Jirga Vows Unflinching Support to Security Forces Amid Rising Militancy in Khyber

Amid growing concerns over the deteriorating security landscape in the Khyber district, elders and influential figures of the Sultankhel tribe reaffirmed their unwavering support to the country’s security forces during a jirga convened on Friday at the Khyber Rifles Headquarters. The meeting, held on the directive of the Commandant Khyber Rifles, brought together senior officials from the military, police, and civil administration. It followed credible intelligence reports about increased movement of suspicious individuals and potential militant activity in and around the Sultankhel areas of Landikotal.

Security officials briefed the tribal notables on the emerging threats, including reports of cross-border infiltration, reactivated sleeper cells, and a spike in extortion and intimidation by armed groups. Alarm has been mounting across Khyber, with local residents reporting unusual nighttime movements, especially in areas such as Tirah, Bara, Jamrud, and Landikotal.

In response, the Sultankhel elders unequivocally condemned terrorism and pledged complete cooperation with state institutions to counter any threats. They publicly declared a social boycott of individuals found to be facilitating or sheltering anti-state elements. “Our land will not be used for nefarious purposes,” the tribal elders vowed, emphasizing unity and resolve in preserving the peace and stability of their region.

The jirga’s strong message comes at a time when concerns are growing over a potential resurgence of militant activity in erstwhile FATA districts, following several years of relative calm after military operations and the region’s 2018 merger into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Officials appreciated the proactive stance taken by the Sultankhel tribe, acknowledging the pivotal role played by local communities in maintaining security. They reiterated the state’s commitment to safeguarding the region and called for sustained collaboration to thwart any attempts at destabilization.
