A police van came under a grenade attack in Usta Muhammad, leaving six people injured, including four policemen and two passersby, in what officials described as an assault carried out by unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants.
Police said the incident occurred near the railway crossing within the jurisdiction of City Police Station, where unknown attackers hurled a hand grenade at the patrolling van. The explosion wounded four policemen along with two civilians who were caught in the blast radius.
The injured, identified among others as Abdul Nabi, Qadir Bakhsh, Abdullah, and Behram, were rushed to hospital for treatment. Doctors said the condition of some of the victims remained under observation.
Soon after the attack, police cordoned off the area, launched a search operation, and began combing nearby localities for the suspects. “The attackers managed to flee, but a hunt has been launched and investigations are in progress,” a police official said.
Authorities said additional security measures had been put in place in the wake of the attack, while law enforcement agencies were gathering evidence to trace those behind the assault.
